Barbarians Past & Present

With the death of bin Laden and the fall of regimes in ways beyond the comprehension of radical Islam, Osama’s ways are hopefuly fading… How about a little hysterical, historical silliness to celebrate? One of the Yahoo news headlines the other day said, “Vandals attack and destroy embassies in Tripoli…” Exactly! (That headline is actually redundant!) Vandals (one of many Germanic tribes) went from sacking Rome in 455 CE to conquering Spain and most of western North Africa, including the coasts of modern Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and, yes, Libya. They were so good at what they did, the words “vandal,” and “vandalism” were added to our lexicon.
